ISLAM RECOGNISED IN OZ

Continuing IOPNA’s bonus series updating on the increasing presence of Islam in Australia

An example of official tolerance by government:
The Seniors Card membership application issued by the NSW Government can be declared before a witness who can certify either: ‘I saw the face of the person’ OR ‘I did not see the face of the person because the person was wearing a face covering, but I am satisfied that the person had a special justification for not removing the covering.’

Current recognition by Australian governments:

The former federal member for Lyne, the Hon. Rob Oakeshott M.P. and the N.S.W. Member for Port Macquarie, Hon. Mrs. Leslie Williams M.P. were both asked:

·   What provision has been made for elected Muslims being sworn in as a Member of Parliament?

·   Do the same conditions apply for a Muslim being sworn in as a Minister of State by the Governor or Governor General?

Answer: An elected Muslim can be sworn into N.S.W. Parliament on the Qur’an and be sworn in as a Minister of State by the governor, on the Qur’an.

Ed Hussic was the first federal Member of Parliament to be sworn in on the Qur’an – 28 September 2010. He was sworn in on the Qu'ran on 1st July 2013, as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and for Broadband rollout.

Another example of tolerance:
Here’s 44 year old Mohammed Issai Issaka taking part in a Muslim riot last year but he now refuses to stand for Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge in the Downing Centre Local Court.
